William Kristol was born on December 23, 1952, in New York City into a Jewish family, the son of Irving Kristol and Gertrude Himmelfarb. In 1997, he co-founded the Project for the New American Century (PNAC) with Robert Kagan. He was chairman of the New Citizenship Project from 1997 to 2005. Kristol, a " Never Trumper", has been associated with a number of conservative think tanks. Kristol is a critic of former president Donald Trump. Ī founder and director of the advocacy organization Defending Democracy Together – responsible for such projects as Republicans for the Rule of Law, Republican Voters Against Trump and Republicans Against Putin – he is also known for playing the leading role in the defeat of President Bill Clinton's health care plan and advocating the U.S. Kristol is now editor-at-large of the center-right publication The Bulwark. A frequent commentator on several networks including CNN, he was the founder and editor-at-large of the political magazine The Weekly Standard.
